“They’re in.”
Alec moved forward at Hayden’s words, falling into a run straight to the entrance of the Onyx den. It was the only signal he needed.
Rhea ran beside him, her power stretched out as if testing the air. Knowing that she was a Hunter wouldn’t stop him from wanting to protect her. Even the strongest of their kind could fall.
She had a right to defend the Pack and the kids just as he did. And she was his mate. They would fight together.
“Ready?” he shouted to her as they reached the front double doors that led into the heart of the den.
Onyx wasn’t the typical community. It was built into the side of mountain with rooms and passageways and different levels. Alec hadn’t been inside, but heard Sable describe the den on a few occasions.
Rhea and Alec kicked the doors. They swung open, slamming into the rock walls they were attached to. The sound echoed through the foyer. About two dozen mutants and shifters froze where they stood, glaring at them for a few moments. Then all hell broke loose.
Alec charged ahead, shifting one hand into a claw and swiping it across the chest of a mutant. Another one rammed him in the back. Alec roared and pushed the burning pain away.
Hayden rushed by him, leaped into the air and shifted into his wolf before landing on top of two rogues.
Alec briefly glanced to Rhea. She was holding her own with a couple of rogues. With a round kick, she connected with a jaw, sending the mutant flying backward. The second one grabbed her arm. Alec was about rush to her until his saw the glow of magic in her blue eyes. A second later the mutant jerked once then fell to the ground, dead.
That was Alec’s mate. His lethal den mother. He shouldn’t be as turned on as he was considering the situation. But he was. He was also proud.
He twisted in a circle, bringing his fist into the chest of rogue. He grunted and whooshed out the air from his lungs. The rogue coughed to catch his breath, but Alec hit him again, then kneed him in the face, knocking him out. It might have killed him. Alec didn’t have time to assess the damages, nor did he care.
Another rushed him, hitting him in the gut. They fell, Alec’s back hitting the floor. It was his turn to lose the ability to breathe for a few seconds. The mutant who attacked him sat on his stomach and punched his face. Alec gripped the bastard by the throat and tried to throw him off. No luck. The mindless asshat locked his legs into Alec’s side.
Fuck. He released his leopard’s claws, biting them into the mutant’s neck. The creature didn’t even flinch. What the fuck? They didn’t feel pain?
With his other hand, Alec punched the mutant’s ribs repeatedly. It didn’t have the desired effect. The creature wrapped both hands around Alec’s neck and squeezed. He bucked with his hips and continued to punch the mutant.
